Bakuchiol
Bakuchiol is derived from Psoralea Corylifolia, aka Babchi, a plant important in Indian and Chinese medicine. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, and hepatoprotective magical abilities like plenty of other Ayurvedic plant extracts. What makes Bakuchiol unique is the recent discovery that it behaves on the skin very similar to well-known skincare superstar, retinol.
“This plant-based compound does not have any structural similarities with retinol, but the various studies have shown that both of them function in very similar ways, producing the same genetic expression in the skin, which, importantly, bakuchiol does without the bothersome irritation,” explains dermatologist Dr. Andrew Webster.
Almost all skin types can benefit from the use of Bakuchiol, but it is ideal for anyone who cannot tolerate retinol, such as patients with sensitive skin or rosacea, or anyone who is looking for a non-irritating, natural ingredient with anti-aging benefits.
The two also work very nicely together, and Bakuchiol can help stabilize the otherwise unstable and hard to formulate retinol. And we are still not done, as Bakuchiol shows anti-aging properties and nice anti-acne effects. 1% Bakuchiol seems to be very effective in itself (57% reduction in acne after 6 weeks treatment) and even better when combined with 2% salicylic acid (67% reduction in acne after 6 weeks).
Bakuchiol has not been shown to increase photosensitivity the way retinol does and can safely be used in the morning and the evening. It’s also safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
