Star Ingredient

Ceramides

Ceramides are a class of fatty acids called lipids. They’re naturally found in skin cells and make up about 50 percent of the epidermis. One of the best ways to understand how ceramides function is to imagine your stratum corneum (the outermost layer of your epidermis) to be made up of bricks and mortar. The skin cells are essentially the brick and the lipids or the fats are in between, and that’s what we call the mortar. Similar to how a stack of bricks wouldn’t be as effective at protecting without the mortar sealing everything in place, neither is your skin cells without ceramides.

Although human skin is naturally made up of ceramides, these fatty acids are lost over time. Age and sun damage reduce the effectiveness of your skin’s natural ceramides—and can eventually deplete them, which weakens your skin’s barrier. Ceramides play an incredibly crucial role in the barrier function of the skin. When skin levels are low in ceramides, conditions can manifest such as eczema, rosacea, dry and sensitive skin, and general skin inflammation.
